The Difference Between Therapy and Life Coaching
Although there are some similarities between therapy and life coaching they are not the same thing. Life coaching has some very valuable benefits for clients, but it is not a substitute for online therapy in Florida or Wisconsin. Let’s explore some key differences by looking more in depth at therapy vs life coaching.
What is Online Coaching?
Online life coaching can come in many forms. The most common for many clients today are traditional life coaching and business coaching/consulting. When a client works with a life coach, the primary focus of the sessions are to set attainable goals and to identify action steps needed to reach the client’s goal(s). Online Life coaches recognize that a person’s past definitely shapes their current behaviors, mindset, and motivators. The online life coach, however, will not focus on past trauma or mental health issues. The goal of the coach and client relationship is to identify blocks in their current life situation that are preventing them from meeting their goals and moving forward. The coach works with the client in their present and future situation.
An Important Distinction of Life Coaching
Another important distinction regarding coaching is that the client/coach relationship is collaborative. A coach has no authority over a client. The client has autonomy over their own life and a coach acts simply as a supportive guide through the goal setting process. It is also common for coaches to have a specific niche of clients that they work with. For instance, a coach may focus on exclusively providing services to working mothers who need help with work life balance. Online coaches ask their clients powerful questions that allow a person to create their own solutions in an empowering process.
The Therapeutic Approach for Therapy vs Life Coaching is Different
Like life coaches, online therapists believe in a client’s right to self-determination. Therapists seek to empower their clients to move forward with their lives in a positive way despite their current or past challenges. Therapists and counselors also act as a guide in the goal setting process with clients. In addition to this, though, therapists have the educational and professional background to understand and treat trauma. They can also recognize and diagnosis mental health disorders. Therapists are well qualified to discuss and help clients navigate trauma, abuse, and other unresolved issues from their past. Although the therapist or counselor often establishes the relationship with the client as collaborative, particularly with respect to the client’s right to self-determination, a therapist does have more of an authoritative role due to their specialized training.
Furthermore, therapists and counselors can not only treat trauma and mental health, they are also trained to recognize risk factors or evidence of self-harm. In fact, they have a legal duty to report any credible threat a client makes that may cause harm to self. Therapists and counselors are also legally mandated to report any suspected abuse to the proper authorities. That all said, online therapists are highly trained and skilled in working with their clients. They are also very empathetic and seek to empower their clients to be the authority in their lives as they help them process and move forward from their past.
