Anxiety doesn’t live in a vacuum, and understanding what it’s connected to is considered every step of the way in therapy.

And in almost every case, anxiety is tied to something very specific happening in a person’s life.

Parenting and Family Stress
Parents represent the single largest group of people who contact us about anxiety. They’re managing the emotional weight of their children’s struggles, navigating difficult school situations, adjusting to life with a new baby, or supporting a teenager who is herself anxious. The worry can be relentless, and there’s often no space to tend to their own mental health. Family therapy can help.
Work Stress and Burnout
Many of our clients are high-functioning professionals who look successful on paper and feel depleted in private. They’re managing demanding careers, navigating workplace dynamics that feel unsustainable, and carrying stress home that spills into their relationships and sleep.

For some clients, particularly BIPOC professionals, workplace stress also includes the compounded toll of code-switching, microaggressions, and the exhaustion of performing constant professionalism under systems that were not designed for them.

Anxiety frequently spikes during major life changes: divorce, college, a new relationship, a breakup, a health diagnosis, a job loss, or becoming a parent. Transitions disrupt the routines and identities that may have kept anxiety manageable, and they often bring grief along with the uncertainty.
Chronic Illness and Physical Health
Living with chronic pain, autoimmune conditions, fibromyalgia, GI disorders, or life-threatening food allergies creates a specific kind of anxiety that’s frequently overlooked in traditional treatment. The body itself becomes a source of uncertainty. Several of our therapists have lived experience with chronic illness and bring both clinical expertise and personal understanding to this work.
Trauma-Linked Anxiety
For many clients, anxiety is the surface presentation of unprocessed trauma — past abuse, relational harm, childhood neglect, or ongoing exposure to difficult circumstances. Therapy that treats anxiety without addressing its roots often provides only temporary relief. Our therapists are trained in trauma-informed approaches, including EMDR, to address anxiety at its source.
Neurodivergent Anxiety
ADHD, autism, and AuDHD frequently co-occur with anxiety — and anxiety in neurodivergent individuals is often misunderstood or misdiagnosed. The exhaustion of masking, the pressure to perform neurotypicality, and the experience of a nervous system that processes the world differently all contribute to anxiety that responds best to neurodivergent-affirming care. We have therapists who specialize specifically in this intersection.

Why Anxiety Doesn’t Just Go Away on Its Own

Anxiety is self-reinforcing. When you avoid a situation that triggers anxiety, you feel temporary relief, which teaches your nervous system that avoidance works. Over time, the things you avoid compound, and the anxiety expands into more areas of your life.

Research consistently shows that untreated anxiety tends to worsen, not stabilize. An excellent article over at PubMed looks into how chronic stress causes progressive damage to nearly every biological system in the body, including cardiovascular, immune, digestive, and neurological function. The longer anxiety goes unaddressed, the more ingrained the patterns become.

Fortunately, anxiety is one of the most treatable mental health conditions. There are a few variables that can impact how quickly you can recover, like session frequency, the relationship with your therapist, and your own expectations.

The duration of anxiety treatment also varies based on the severity of your symptoms and the specific approach used, but evidence-based therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy typically range from 12 to 16 weekly sessions. Ultimately, you and your therapist will collaboratively set tentative goals, regularly review your progress, and adjust the timeline as needed.

Starting sooner matters. Early intervention increases your options and reduces the likelihood that a temporary stress response becomes a chronic pattern.

CBT helps you catch the thought and behavior loops that sustain anxiety so you can interrupt them before they take over the day.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT gives you concrete skills for riding out big emotions, tolerating distress without making it worse, and staying grounded in the relationships that matter.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT helps shift your relationship with anxiety so it stops running the show. You can acknowledge it, feel it, and still do the things that matters to you.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

IFS works with the idea that your mind isn’t one unified voice. Rather, you have different internal voices or sides that show up in different situations. IFS helps you identify which of your internal voices are driving your anxiety and what they’re trying to protect.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

ERP is the standard of care for OCD and related anxiety conditions. It helps you learn through direct experience that the discomfort you’ve been working so hard to avoid is something you can actually tolerate, and that the feared catastrophe rarely arrives.

Walk and Talk Therapy

Walk and talk therapy is a therapeutic modality/approach that uses movement, environment, and conversation as parts of treatment.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a trauma-focused approach recommended by the World Health Organization for PTSD. It helps your brain finish processing difficult experiences, so the memory of something that happened years ago stops triggering the same reaction and anxiety today.

Therapy at True You Always is available through secure telehealth throughout Florida, and in-person therapy and in-person walk and talk therapy available in select locations, including Merritt Island, Melbourne, Tampa, and Titusville.

Whether you meet through telehealth, meet in a traditional in-person setting, or use a combination of formats, the work is tailored to what helps you feel safe enough to engage and supported enough to make meaningful change.

Sessions are 50 minutes, one on one.

Your first session is about understanding — what’s bringing you in, what’s been tried before, and what you most want to change. Most clients leave feeling less alone with what they’ve been carrying.
In early sessions, your therapist helps you build immediate coping tools — while starting to map the patterns keeping anxiety in place.
As therapy progresses, you go deeper into the underlying drivers: the beliefs, histories, and nervous system responses that fuel it. This is where lasting change happens.
Over time, clients notice anxiety showing up less frequently — and when it does, they feel more equipped to respond rather than react. Many also describe a quieter inner critic, greater tolerance for uncertainty, and stronger self-trust.

What is the difference between anxiety and stress?

Stress is typically a response to an external pressure, like a deadline, conflict, or difficult situation. It tends to resolve when the situation changes. Anxiety is a persistent internal state that continues even when external stressors are removed. Both can cause significant suffering and both are treatable in therapy, but they often call for somewhat different approaches.

Do I need a formal anxiety diagnosis to start therapy?

No. Most people begin therapy without a diagnosis and don’t need one to benefit from treatment. Your therapist will work with you to understand what you’re experiencing and build a plan that fits, regardless of whether you have a formal clinical label.

Do you treat OCD?

Yes. Several of our therapists specialize in OCD and related patterns, including intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, and perfectionism. We use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which is the evidence-based standard of care for OCD according to the International OCD Foundation.

My anxiety seems connected to trauma. Can you help with that?

Yes. Anxiety and trauma frequently co-occur, and treating anxiety without addressing the underlying trauma often produces only partial or temporary results. Our trauma-trained therapists use EMDR and trauma-informed approaches specifically for this.

I‘m a BIPOC professional and I’m worried I won’t be understood in therapy.

That’s a valid concern, and one we take seriously. We have BIPOC therapists that specialize specifically in therapy for BIPOC adults. You won’t have to explain your cultural context to your therapist before doing the actual work.
